Intermittent modem problems (I/O or IRQ Conflicts)
The modem is already in use by another dial-up
networking application.
Dial Up Networking could not negotiate a
valid set of network protocols.
I hear the modem connect, but I can't send
email or look at the web.
Windows says that my username or password
is invalid.
My modem connects to ComBase for 5-10 Minutes,
then Disconnects.
Windows won't save my password
A Post-Dial Terminal Window Appears every
time I dial into ComBase.
Why am I losing IP connectivity (I remain connected
but unable to route) on the 56K POP's?
There is no dialtone. Check
your connection and try again.
1. Check to see that the phone line is plugged in.
The phone line should be in the modem port
that says line or telco.
2. Plug a phone in and ensure that the line is working.
3. Double Click on My Computer
Double Click on Dial-Up Networking
Right Click on ComBase
Choose Properties
Click the Configure button.

To determine whether the serial
port I/O address and IRQ settings are correctly defined:
1. Click Start
Point to Settings
Click Control Panel
Double-click System
Click Device Manager
Click Ports
Select a specific port, and then click Properties
2. Click Resources to display the current resource
settings for that port.
To find the correct settings, consult your
modem documentation.
3. In the Resources dialog box, check the Conflicting
devices list to determine
whether the modem is using resources in conflict
with other devices.
4. If the modem is in conflict with other devices,
Click Change Settings
Click a configuration that
does not have resource conflicts.
NOTE: Do not use a modem on COM3
if there is a serial mouse or other device on COM1.
Usually, COM1 and COM3 ports
use the same IRQ and cannot be used simultaneously
on most computers. The same is true of the COM2
and COM4 ports. If possible, change the COM3
and COM4 port to an IRQ setting
that is not in conflict.
Also, some display adapters have an address conflict with COM4
ports. To work around this conflict, use another COM
port or replace your graphics adapters.

Why am I losing IP connectivity (I remain
connected but I am unable to route) on the 56K POP's?
Our 56K POP's are enabled with 56Kflex modems
and we have seen instances
where customers using US Robotics x2 modems experience
instability.
If you have a USR 56K (x2) modem, please try
the following:
1. Add the following modem command: ats15=128 in the PPP
dialer.
2. Set the maximum connect speed to 33.6.
If you are using non-56K USR modem, then still
use item 1 above.
Setting ats15=128 disables v.42 compression,
which has a tendency
to hang or freeze connections (loss of IP connectivity).
